Cara nak kumpul modal dari internet

Sebenarnya kalau nak buat duit kat internet ni, modal pon kena ada juga. Tapi tak der la tinggi sangat modal macam bisnes konvensional yang lain.

Antara kos yang terlibat dalam internet marketing ni seperti domain, hosting, autoresponder, software, ebay fee store, terapeak monthly subscription,adwords,outsource,dan banyak lagi yang perlu diambil kira. Ada yang anda perlu bayar sekali sahaja, ada yang perlu tiap2x bulan dan ada juga perlu dibayar setahun sekali.

Semua ini akan masuk dalam expenses bisnes anda. Kalau buat ebay, lagi banyak monthly expenses yang anda kena aware. Jangan dok syok listing barang jer sampai lupa fee yang perlu anda bayar. Seronok barang terjual dalam RM500, tapi bila check fee kena bayar, dah RM700, tu kira untung ke rugi? Lu fikirla sendiri. Sama juga dengan kos PPC. Kena sentiasa buat tracking brape ROI yang kita dapat. Dari RM1000 yang dikeluarkan, berapa pulangan yang kita dapat? Break even tak. Untung ke rugi.  Jangan sangka buat bisnes internet ni tak rugi. Tapi kerugiannya mungkin tak sebesar bisnes offline yang lain.

Kalau student mungkin kekurangan modal nak start. Tapi itu bukan alasan untuk berniaga. Banyak cara yang boleh anda buat untuk gain capital ini. Meh sini aku nak habaq….

1. Berniaga di forum - ni salah satu teknik yang best juga. Modal tak perlu pun, yang penting kena aktif kat forum tersebut dan tahu apa demand kat sana. Aku sendiri pon pernah jual laptop and kad prepaid kat forum. Posting jer kat sana, kalau ada rezeki, memang akan berlaku sales. Tapi jangan la sampai 10 thread ko buka dalam sehari. Tu dah spamming. Baru 2-3 posting, dah open thread jual barang. Orang malas layan jer kadang2x. Bagi banyak sket posting tuh, baru start berniaga.

2. Adsense di blogspot - setup blogspot, cari High Paying Keyword, long tail keyword, masukkan adsense kod dalam blog anda dan buat link building. Ini antara cara yang best juga. Tak perlu modal juga. Register sahaja. Kalau tak reti, google jer, banyak blog citer pasal adsense, tak payah nak beli ebook. Try and error. Kalau ada duit, boleh jer nak beli ebook pasal adsense nih. Ni aku cakap bagi saper yang tak der modal langsung nak start.

3. Freelancer - Cuba jadi freelancer. Cari forum2x yang banyak pakai freelancer. Ataupun pergi site macam elance.com atau getafreelancer.com. Tengok kerja apa yang boleh anda buat. Tulis artikel ker, link building ke, video creation ke, macam-macam lagi yang boleh anda jumpa kat sana. Dia sanggup bayar $1  untuk upload video je. Ok latu, satu video 3 hengget, sapa nak kasik kan. Kena rajin la sikit sebab freelancer ni kita yang cari pelanggan, bukan pelanggan cari kita. Bayaran agak murah sikit la tapi ok la, still leh dapat duit.

4. Video Marketing - upload video ke youtube dan letakkan link website anda kat bahagian description. Monetize dengan affiliate ke, adsense ke. Upload la 30 video sehari, ada la hasilnya nanti. Aku pernah buat gak, 2 tahun tak sentuh, sampai sekarang video tu orang dok komen lagi and still dapat trafik. Fuyooo,sapa nak kasi kan, free je sumer tuh.

5. Servis - kalau ada dah ada nama, ada website, boleh juga tawarkan servis kat orang. Design ke, copywriting servis ker, apa sahaja la. Kena buat promosi sikit dan letakkan portfolio anda. Kalau kita yang offer servis, selalunya kita yang letakkan harga, customer nak baru dia amik, tak nak, pi cari orang lain,hehe.

Banyak lagi cara sebenarnya nak cari modal ni. Anda kena kreatif sikit dan banyakkan mencari. Bukan semua bisnes perlukan modal.

95% Adalah Orang Yang Gagal

Mesti anda selalu mendengar perkataan di atas. Kenapa yer? Kenapa hanya 5% sahaja orang yang berjaya dalam sesuatu bidang itu? Adakah ini memang suatu hukum alam atau secara kebetulan? Tak kisah la dalam ape jua bidang, samada perniagaan, akademik dan sebagainya.

Aku terlintas nak tulis tentang artikel ini sebab baru tadi aku menonton pasal video PPC yang dihantar oleh IM di luar sana, aku memang suka subscribe blog-blog yang penuh informasi ni. Dia amik contoh hot niche dan terdapat lebih kurang 2000 lebih advertiser yg menggunakan stail PPC ni dan yang profitable hanyalah 20 ads sahaja. See, only 1% really make money!. Wow, patutlah Google kaya nak mampus, market dominator. Statistik offline bisnes juga menyatakan, hanya 5-10% sahaja company mampu bertahan selepas 5 tahun. Maksudnya, kalau ada 100 syarikat yang didaftarkan hari ini, hanya 10 syarikat sahaja yang berjaya, yang lain pi mana??

Kalau di US, memang ramai Millionaire yang dihasilkan setiap tahun, tetapi jumlahnya masih dalam lingkungan 5-10% sahaja. Disebabkan jumlah rakyat di sana ratusan juta orang menyebabkan kita rasa orang kat sana lebih berjaya dari kita. Padahal sama je. Disebabkan jumlah rakyatnya yang ramai menyebabkan industri ilmu dan perniagaan berkembang pesat di sana.

Adakah anda tergolong dalam 95% itu?

failureKegagalan adalah kejayaan yang tertunda. Lagi banyak anda gagal, lagi cepat anda berjaya. Orang yang gagal adalah orang yang berhenti. Selagi anda tidak berhenti, selagi itu anda tidak dianggap gagal. Mungkin hari ini anda memulakan perniagaan, 2-3 bulan kemudian bisnes anda seakan tidak memberikan apa2x pulangan. Adakah anda akan terus melangkah ke hadapan, melecong ke kanan dan kiri, atau melangkah ke belakang? Anda yang tentukan. Apa yang anda ada sekarang ialah hasil daripada tindakan anda pada masa lepas.

Gagal sebenarnya hanya lah suatu istilah yang direka, lawan kepada perkataan berjaya, begitu juga sebaliknya. Ini semua hanyalah persepsi manusia sahaja. Persepsi ni lahir dari pengalaman manusia dari kehidupan sehari-hari. Sejak bila kita mengenal perkataan Gagal ini?. Mungkin pada waktu persekolahan, markah peperiksaan kita tak bagus, lalu kita dinasihati atau dimarahi oleh ibubapa, guru, kawan2x supaya lebih rajin lagi belajar supaya tidak gagal lagi. Kita dah pernah merasa apa itu gagal. Kita pon dah boleh mengklasifikasikan sesuatu perkara itu sebagai gagal atau berjaya. Jadi, apabila kita melalui situasi yang sama, apa yang kita harapkan tidak kesampaian, terus kita minda kita buat conclusion yang kita dah gagal.

Berbeza sewaktu kita mula2x belajar naik basikal dan berjalan. Masa tu kita tak tahu pon apa itu gagal, berjaya. Sebab itu kita terus bangkit walaupun beberapa kali jatuh dari basikal walaupun lutut dah berdarah, lagi2x kalau naik basikal besar. Pernahkah anda lihat, seorang budak tu jatuh basikal, dan dari saat itu dia tak pernah sentuh basikal lagi? Tak pernah, sebab masa tu akal dia tak dapat mengklasifikasikan jenis keadaan yang dia alami ketika itu.

Kejayaan juga merupakan suatu persepsi. Tafsiran kejayaan berbeza di antara kita. Ada yang anggap kejayaan ialah sekiranya dia dapat menjawat jawatang yang besar dalam syarikat, ada yang anggap kalau dapat jadi jutawan merupakan kejayaan untuk dia, ada yang anggap bebas hutang adalah suatu kejayaan dan ada yang anggap dapat menurunkan berat badan itu suatu kejayaan,hohoho.

Sebenarnya, kita ini lebih banyak berjaya daripada gagal. Yer ke? Sebab kita berjaya dapat apa yang kita nak. Itula tafsiran paling mudah untuk kejayaan. Contohnya, malam ni kita nak makan koeyteow kerang, balik kerja je, mandi2x, terus kuar pergi melantak koeyteow kerang. Itu pon satu kejayaan kan? Tapi berapa ramai dari kita yang mengucapkan terima kasih kepada Allah dengan apa kita dapat hari ini? Kejayaan sebegini tidak kita rasakan kerana ia dah jadi rutin harian kita. Makan, minum, tidur, bercakap, bergerak dan sebagainya. Sebaliknya, kita telah “mencipta” suatu istilah kejayaan yang luar dari kebiasaan dari kita dek disebabkan wujudnya rasa kagum kepada sesuatu benda. Maybe kita melihat seorang bisnesman yang berjaya dengan kehidupan serba mewah. Lalu, kita menetapkan, kita akan berjaya kalau kita dapat apa yang dia dapat. Seorang IPT student melihat kawan dia dapat CGPA4.0 dalam peperiksaan. Kawan dia ni mendapat perhatian ramai orang, dapat anugerah, biasiswa, dikenali, dan sebagainya. Lalu kita menetapkan, kita akan berjaya kalau kita dapat apa yang dia dapat.

Itulah tafsiran kejayaan pada manusia yang akan menyebabkan kita tidak akan puas dengan apa yang kita ada sekarang. Tetapi, kalau kita tengok orang lain yang kuat ibadahnya, baik akhlaknya, ada ke kita nak jadi macam diorang?. Masuk tak dalam list kejayaan anda kalau dapat berubah menjadi orang yang lebih baik?. Sebab itu dalam Islam, kita disuruh melihat akhirat di atas dan dunia di bawah. Maksudnya, kalau kita income 4k sebulan, kita mengucapkan syukur kepada Allah kerana diberi rezeki dan nikmat sebegini kerana masih ada orang yang lebih rendah pendapatan dari kita dan semoga rezeki ini digunakan pada jalanNya. Bukannya, kita tengok orang atas dari kita. Kita dah ada 4k sebulan, orang sebelah rumah income 10k, kita pon nak kejar orang tu. Dah dapat 10k, tiba2x buka paper, ada cerita orang berpendapatan 100k sebulan, kita pon nak jadi macam dia. Sampai bila tak habis kalau macam tu!!. Dalam urusan akhirat, kita kena lihat orang di atas kita. Kita sepatunya cemburu kepada mereka yang mempunyai tahap istiqamah yang tinggi, sabar orangnya, kuat ibadahnya. Lalu, kita berdoa kepada Allah, semoga Dia memberikan kekuatan kepada kita untuk menjadi seorang yang lebih baik. Bukannya, tengok orang tak sembahnyang,kita pun cakap, “kira bagus la ni aku semayang, orang len tak semayang pon”, adoyaiiiiiiiiiii….

Panjang gak aku tulis hari ni,hehehe.

Kesimpulannya, kejayaan adalah milik sesiapa sahaja. Anda yang tentukan kejayaan anda sendiri. Sentiasa berdoa kepada pemilik segala Kekayaan dan Kejayaan, Allah Rabbul Jalil. Berkomunikasilah dengan Dia, minta lah ape yang anda inginkan walaupun hanya nak makan koeyteow kerang.

“Ya Allah, malam ni nak makan koeyteow kerang la.”

“Ya Allah, esok kejut aku pukul 5 ye”

“Ya Allah, macam mana nak pergi ke Seremban ek”

“Ya Allah, bantu aku menjalankan bisnes ni”

Istilah IM

Istilah IM amat sinonim dengan dunia perniagaan internet. Dulu, masa awal-awal terlibat dengan perniagaan maya ni, aku pelik juga kenapa perniagaan internet ni orang panggil Internet Marketing, kenapa tak panggil je Internet Business ke, kenapa marketing yang diletakkan instead of business?

Bila dah lama sket, baru ler aku paham, sebenarnya dalam dunia internet ini, marketing adalah nadi utama kepada bisnes anda. Sama juga sebenarnya dengan perniagaan offline yang lain. Kaji dulu kehendak pasaran, dan lakukan promosi sehingga lebam biji mata. Mana-mana bisnes pun sebenarnya sama sahaja konsep asasnya, tidak ada benda yang baru pun, maybe teknikal part tu kena belajar sikit, yang lain semua sama. Jadi, kalau anda pernah berjaya dalam dunia offline, anda juga boleh berjaya di dunia online, cuma medium sahaja yang berbeza.

Kaedah internet marketing ini banyak sangat kalau nak dibincangkan dan tak akan habis sampai bila2x. Setiap tahun akan muncul teknik2x terbaru untuk mendapatkan trafik ke website anda. PPC,SEO,forum marketing,artikel marketing,video marketing,social bookmarking,twitter,facebook,viral marketing, dan bermacam kaedah lagi yang boleh anda gunakan.

Tetapi, dalam banyak2x kaedah marketing dalam dunia internet ni, terdapat 2 cara yang paling berkesan dan popular. Iaitu PPC (payperclick) dan SEO (search engine optimization). Dua kaedah ini kalau anda betul2x kuasai, jual ape pun masyukk. PPC ni anda keluarkan duit untuk mengiklankan website anda. Iklan anda akan diiklankan di website2x yg berkaitan atau di search engine itu sendiri apabila user memasukkan certain keyword. PPC ni memang cepat dia punya result. Kalau nak disamakan dengan dunia offline, ianya sama macam iklan-iklan yang dipaparkan di TV,radio,suratkhabar,majalah. Lead yang akan dapat memang tinggi dan cepat. Hari ini kuar TV, esok dah ramai yang akan call/beli barang anda.

Berbeza pula dengan SEO, ianya agak lambat untuk mendapatkan result, tetapi lebih bagus untuk long term projek. Anda kena buat link building,on-page,on-off optimization,dan berbagai cara lagi untuk mendapatkan PR yang tinggi dan mendapatkan kedudukan yang baik di search engine. SEO ni lambat sebab ianya free, tapi susah sket pada awalnya sahaja, tapi bila dah stabil, anda boleh “lupakan” website anda dan trafik akan datang sendiri tanpa anda melakukan promosi lagi. Pasif income la dalam dunia IM ni, hehehe.

Dua kaedah ini juga dipanggil SEM, iaitu search engine marketing. So, kepada newbie2x diluar, kalau nak fast track buat duit di internet ini, better belajar dua benda ini dulu dan tahu serba sedikit tentang teknikal part. Dalam proses tu, anda akan jumpa lebih banyak lagi teknik lagi.

Tapi, kalau nak buat duit dengan Ebay, dua benda ni tak payah belajar pon tak per, hehehe, sebab Ebay memang dah lain industri, itu dah ada trafik sedia ada, tapi asas bisnes tu masih ada, demand and supply, hot trend dan sebagainya.

Bagaimana melakukan Market Research?

Sebenarnya asas perniagaan ini bergantung kepada supply and demand principle. Kalau ada demand, maka sesuatu produk itu dapat dijual. Begitu juga dalam dunia Internet Marketing ini, kita kena tahu apa kehendak pasaran semasa, hot trend semasa, our competitor, maka kita akan dapat merangka strategi berikutnya.

Terdapat banyak cara untuk kita mengkaji market behaviour ni. Nanti aku akan buat satu tutorial untuk anda. Kalau panjang sangat, maybe aku akan buat satu report dalam bentuk ebook.

Kalau kita mahir bagaimana untuk melakukan research ini, produk apepun kita boleh jual di internet. Ada cara berbayar dan ada cara percuma. Kita start dulu dengan yang percuma, dah ada duit sikit baru start beli tools atau software yang dapat membantu kita. Sama juga dengan Ebay, lagi mahir kita buat research, makin banyak barang yang akan laku.

Apa yang patut kita tahu dalam melakukan market research ini ? Antaranya :

Demand - Keyword yang ditaip di search engine membolehkan kita tahu apakah yang orang cari. Juga dikenali sebagai keyword research.

Supply - Adakah terdapat supply di pasaran semasa. Adakah barang yang orang cari itu ada terdapat di internet?

Competitor - Berapa ramai pesaing anda dalam sesuatu keyword/produk tersebut. Part ini yang paling best sebenarnya. Sebab kita kena identify and cari cara bagaimana nak mengatasi saingan anda.

Market Value - Nilai pasaran. Maksudnya berapa jumlah transaction atau turnover  dalam sesuatu industri tuh. Macam Ebay, walaupun berpuluh ribu dia punya Seller, tapi disebabkan market value yang besar, jumlah transaksi mencecah Billion USD sehari, maka masing-masing ada portion tersendiri.

Market Share - Berapa ramai player yang ada dan berapa jumlah peratusan dalam market value yang diorang kuasai.  Contoh dalam industri search engine, Google menguasai 54% nilai pasaran. Hohoho. Memang big player la.

Itu antara faktor atau fakta yang perlu lakukan dalam melakukan market research untuk memasarkan produk di internet. Aku bukan tahu semua pun, ni just baru 2-3 kali membaca dan sebagai perkongsian untuk anda. Kalau ada info terbaru akan diupdate di blog ini kelak. InsyaAllah…

Steven Paul Jobs dilahirkan pada 24 February 1955. Merupakan seorang American businessman, co-founder, Chairman, dan CEO of Apple Inc. Jobs juga merupakan bekas CEO di Pixar Animation Studios.

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That’s it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: “We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?” They said: “Of course.” My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents’ savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn’t see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn’t interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn’t all romantic. I didn’t have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends’ rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn’t have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can’t capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.

I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn’t know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple’s current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

I’m pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn’t been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn’t even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor’s code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you’d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I’m fine now.

This was the closest I’ve been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960’s, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.
